Joint Doctoral School

Joint Doctoral School (SU-UoA)

Overview

The Joint Doctoral School brings together early-career researchers to explore key ideas in mathematical modelling, artificial intelligence, data analysis and mathematical modelling. These fields are essential for tackling complex real-world problems across science and technology.

The program includes lectures by leading experts and interactive sessions on both theory and applications. Participants will also present their own research through short talks or posters, creating a collaborative environment for learning, feedback, and networking.

Who should apply: PhD students, advanced Master's students, early postdocs.

VENUE

The School will be held in the new research complex, the Centre of Excellence “Universities for Science, Informatics and Technology in the e-Society” (UNITe), at Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”. The complex is located behind the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics building.

TOPICS

  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Data Analysis
  • Mathematical Modelling

Format and Activities

Each part of the doctoral school will take place in person over 7 days, with the first and last days reserved for arrival and departure. The main academic program will run for 5 full days, offering a balanced mix of lectures, interactive sessions, and networking opportunities.

The planned activities include:

  • Lectures by leading researchers in mathematical modelling, artificial intelligence, and data analysis

  • Hands-on tutorials or problem sessions to deepen understanding through practical examples

  • PhD student presentations, either as short talks or posters, with opportunities for feedback

  • Discussion sessions or panels on interdisciplinary themes and research challenges

  • Informal gatherings and social events to promote networking and collaboration in a relaxed setting

The summer school will be conducted in English, and all activities will take place at the host institution's venue.
