Focus, educational goals

The BSc programme in Data Analytics aims to prepare specialists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to perform data collection and data analysis activities in order to make informed decisions and build models for future actions, based on a solid mathematical background, combined with methods of statistics, informatics and modern information technology.

Students gain knowledge and skills at a good enough level and are able to apply them in all sectors of business and management, which rely on highly effective data analysis as a factor for sustainable development.

Training

The curriculum is based on training in a series of subjects in Mathematics, Statistics and Informatics, which provide the necessary theoretical background of students. Students acquire fundamental knowledge in many areas of Mathematics: algebra, calculus, mathematical modeling, probability theory and mathematical statistics, optimization, numerical methods. In the field of Informatics, students acquire basic knowledge and skills in programming and data structures, discrete structures and algorithms, databases and database management systems, intelligent software systems.

The specialized part of the curriculum provides courses in the field of Data Science, including statistical modeling, machine learning and data mining, big data analysis and processing. Modern technologies and relevant software tools for data storage, annotation, enrichment, integration and transfer, statistical analysis and data visualization, knowledge discovery, etc. have also been studied.

Emphasis of the training is gaining knowledge in the field of project development and management, legal and ethical aspects of data management, as well as building communication and presentation skills and teamwork skills.

Many electives, various workshops and internship opportunities are provided that allow students to receive appropriate specialized training. Upon successful passing of exams in specific elective subjects, students receive additional professional qualifications. The training finishes with taking a state exam or defending a thesis.

Professional competence

Bachelors in Data Analytics have theoretical knowledge, practical skills and professional competencies that allow them to work effectively in any field in which mathematical methods and software tools for data collection and analysis are applied. During their studies, students acquire the basic knowledge required for the professional field in a number of mathematical areas: algebra, differential and integral calculus, mathematical modeling, optimization, numerical methods.

The obtained mathematical background is upgraded in the process of training with in-depth theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the field of probability theory and mathematical statistics, as well as with in-depth knowledge and modern practical skills in Computer Science such as programming, data structures and algorithms, databases.

Upon graduation, students have the main knowledge, skills and professional competencies specific to the programme:

  • They know approaches and methods for data modeling.
  • They are able to apply their theoretical knowledge in formalizing, modeling and solving practical problems and presenting the results.
  • They are able to think analytically and critically.
  • They are able to work both individually and in a team.
  • They know the methods and tools for successful communication with colleagues, managers, customers, users and other stakeholders.
  • They know the legal and ethical principles of working with sensitive data.

As a result of the training, students develop the ability to learn and acquire new knowledge and competencies lifelong.

Professional realization

Bachelors in Data Analytics can hold a variety of positions - analysts, experts, consultants, designers, project managers, team leaders, etc. – in various fields of business and management, for example:

  • in financial institutions and insurance companies,
  • in healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry,
  • in manufacturing and trading companies, in particular in e-commerce companies,
  • in logistics, transport and telecommunications,
  • in media companies, sociological agencies and companies for consultations and market research,
  • in centers for monitoring and research of energy and environment,
  • in educational and research institutions.

Graduates of this BSc programme have very good opportunities to continue their education in master’s and doctoral programmes and for realization as lecturers and researchers in academic institutions or specialists in development centers of business and industry.
